DR. JAY ROSHAL, PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF BIOLOGY, PASSED AWAY ON MONDAY, JULY 12. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at his home. Dr. Roshal was a professor of biology at UMM from 1960-1983, and the first chair of the Division of Science and Mathematics at UMM.
THE CAMPUS WELCOMES JAMES D. MORALES, who has begun his duties as associate vice chancellor for enrollment. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in speech communication from the University of Utah, and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Minnesota. He has served for over 10 years in various admissions and enrollment management capacities. Most recently, he was director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn.
THE FALL FACULTY RETREAT will be held at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria on Monday, Aug. 23, and the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 24 The theme for this fall is "Teaching and Learning for a Multi-Cultural Society." THE MORRIS CAMPUS WILL BE REPRESENTED, along with all University of Minnesota campuses, in a University-wide exhibit in the U building at the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 26-Sept. 6. The exhibit will provide an abbreviated showcase of outreach, student opportunities and research on each of the campuses. In addition, the UMM jazz combo, "Funky Gumbo," will entertain on stage in front of the U exhibition building from noon-4 pm on Monday, Sept. 6. Combo members are UMM students Casey Kavanagh, Tom Hencal, Dustin Retzlaff, Tom Nordlund, and non-UMMer Bill Engelbretson. The U of M building at the Minnesota State Fair is located two blocks west of gate 5 on Dan Patch Avenue.
Sara Kloek '05 and Rep. Cy Thao '95 will attend the Democratic National Convention in Boston July 26-29 as delegates for presidential candidate John Kerry. Kloek is also organizing a bus trip, "Young Patriots Tour: 2800 Miles for a Stronger America." Forty Minnesota college students will campaign in key states beginning on July 21, and attend the College Democrats of America National Convention prior to attending events surrounding the Democratic National Convention. Other UMM student participants are Avi Rosenmaun, Jen Schreifels, Tim Lindberg, Anthony Cary, Emily Schweiger, Isaac Linehan-Clodfelter, and John Schrom.
Jenny Nellis [studio art and chair, Division of the Humanities] has been appointed to the West Central Initiative Board of Directors. WCI is a public foundation serving Stevens County and eight other counties in west central Minnesota. WCI provides programs and resources in the areas of quality employment, workforce issues, family and community.
John Stuart Ingle [studio art emeritus] participated in the Pure Prairie Art Sale June 17-27 at the Bird Island Business Center.
