DR. JAY ROSHAL, PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF BIOLOGY, PASSED AWAY ON MONDAY, JULY 12. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at his home. Cards may be sent to his wife, Hertha, at 2124 North Monroe Street, Arlington, VA 22207. Memorial donations may be sent to: Chicago Botanical Gardens, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL 60022. Dr. Roshal was a professor of biology at UMM from 1960-1983, and the first chair of the Division of Science and Mathematics at UMM.

THE CAMPUS WELCOMES JAMES D. MORALES, who has begun his duties as associate vice chancellor for enrollment. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in speech communication from the University of Utah, and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Minnesota. He has served for over 10 years in various admissions and enrollment management capacities. Most recently, he was director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn.

THE FALL FACULTY RETREAT will be held at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria on Monday, Aug. 23, and the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 24 The theme for this fall is "Teaching and Learning for a Multi-Cultural Society." Registration deadline is Thursday, July 15, 2004. Please return your registration form today to Linda Pederson at the Faculty Center.

MORRIS EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH will hold its Bible School closing event at the UMM P.E. Center and RFC July 23. About 450 adult and student participants are expected.

THE "STUDENT SUICIDE: INSTITUTIONAL POLICY, LIABILITY AND PREVENTION" AUDIO CONFERENCE will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. July 28 in the Behmler Hall Conference Room.

GRAB A COLLEAGUE AND VOLUNTEER TOGETHER AT THE UMM BOOTH DURING THE STEVENS COUNTY FAIR AUGUST 12-15. Faculty and staff volunteers have traditionally been the driving force each year behind the booth's rousing success. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with west central Minnesota (and beyond) fairgoers. Volunteer by e-mailing Judy Riley at rileyjk@mrs.umn.edu/ by August 10. Choose from the following 2-hour time slots [and an occasional 2-1/2 hr-slot]:á Thurs, Aug. 12: 6-8 pm, 8-10 pm Fri, Aug. 13: noon-2 pm, 2-4 pm, 4-6 pm, 6-8 pm, 8-10:30 pm Sat, Aug. 14: noon-2 pm, 2-4 pm, 4-6 pm, 6-8 pm, 8-10:30 pm Sun, Aug 15: noon-2 pm, 2-4 pm, 4-6 pm. [6-8 pm closing slot already taken.] Exhibition booths are located inside the Lee Community Center adjacent to the Stevens County Fairgrounds. [A fan is provided as baseball afficionados know, every fan counts!]

THE MORRIS CAMPUS WILL BE REPRESENTED, along with all University of Minnesota campuses, in a University-wide exhibit in the U building at the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 26-Sept. 6. The exhibit will provide an abbreviated showcase of outreach, student opportunities and research on each of the campuses. In addition, the UMM jazz combo, "Funky Gumbo," will entertain on stage in front of the U exhibition building from noon-4 pm on Monday, Sept. 6. Combo members are UMM students Casey Kavanagh, Tom Hencal, Dustin Retzlaff, Tom Nordlund, and non-UMMer Bill Engelbretson. The U of M building at the Minnesota State Fair is located two blocks west of gate 5 on Dan Patch Avenue.
Accomplishments

Sara Kloek '05 and Rep. Cy Thao '95 will attend the Democratic National Convention in Boston July 26-29 as delegates for presidential candidate John Kerry. Kloek is also organizing a bus trip, "Young Patriots Tour: 2800 Miles for a Stronger America." Forty Minnesota college students will campaign in key states beginning on July 21, and attend the College Democrats of America National Convention prior to attending events surrounding the Democratic National Convention. Other UMM student participants are Avi Rosenmaun, Jen Schreifels, Tim Lindberg, Anthony Cary, Emily Schweiger, Isaac Linehan-Clodfelter, and John Schrom.

Jenny Nellis [studio art and chair, Division of the Humanities] has been appointed to the West Central Initiative Board of Directors. WCI is a public foundation serving Stevens County and eight other counties in west central Minnesota. WCI provides programs and resources in the areas of quality employment, workforce issues, family and community.

John Stuart Ingle [studio art emeritus] participated in the Pure Prairie Art Sale June 17-27 at the Bird Island Business Center.

George Fosgate [theatre arts emeritus] is Grandpa Vanderhof in Mount Hood Repertory Theatre Company's Production of "You Can't Take it With You," July 23-August 15 in Gresham, Ore. On-line reservations at www.mthoodrep.org or 503-491-5950. "Retirement rocks!" shared Pat and George.
