The agreement reached March 30 between the Minnesota House, Senate and Governor fully funds both the biomass heating/cooling plant and the new college/community athletic field. The proposed allocation includes $5,800,000.00 for these two projects for UMM and the community. Pending final approval, this would enable the campus to take another major step towards energy independence and alternative fuels, and provides another opportunity to cooperate with the Morris Area School district, along with the shared-use track and the RFC, in recreational and competition facilities.

The Search Committee for the Director of Communications at the University of Minnesota, Morris invites you to attend a presentation by the first candidate. Marcelyn Kropp will give a public presentation from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 7, in the Science Auditorium. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Marcelyn Kropp holds a bachelor of arts degree in communications/public relations from California State University, Fullerton, and a master of arts in communications management from the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication. Currently, she is completing her doctorate in mass communication/telecommunication, with a specialization in history, at Ohio University. Professionally, Marcelyn has over 25 years of professional experience in communications. The Director of Communications at UMM will advance the college’s local, regional, and national visibility, and create an integrated and effective collegiate communications program utilizing a broad spectrum of media including new media technologies. Four female artists will headline the 27th Annual Jazz Fest this Thursday-Saturday at UMM. Jane Bunneton, soprano saxophone and flute Sarah Jane Cion, piano Sherrie Maricle, drums and Sarah Morrow, trombone, will perform along with UMM Jazz Ensembles. See the results of Service Learning projects by UMM students during a reception at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance, 630 Atlantic Avenue in Morris. Students in Therese Buchmiller's photography class and Jennifer Rothchild's sociology class interviewed and took photos of local farmers in order to learn about the importance of local, sustainable agriculture. Photos and writings will be on display along with artist profiles written by sociology students who interviewed local artists. Service Learning is a classroom experience that utilizes community service, community based research or other civic engagement activities to meet course goals and community needs. Mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Symposium on Small Towns, coming to UMM June 7-8, 2005. This year's Symposium will explore the future of small towns and rural areas surrounding the theme, "Shaping Our Future." Participants will discuss which local and global trends are likely to continue, determine how rural communities will work to shape their future, and learn how our political framework will likely change and what this means to small towns. [4/1/05 Naples (Fla.) Daily News Neopolitan] An article, "Wind power graduates to college," states: "The University of Minnesota took a different approach. Its College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Science installed the turbine at a branch campus and laid cables directly to the University of Minnesota-Morris. The Morris campus will pay almost 25 percent less per kilowatt-hour by using power from the turbine, which is expected to cover more than half of its energy needs, according to Greg Cuomo, (head of the WCROC). Cuomo said the idea of putting up a turbine came to him while he was sitting in his office watching the snow blowing sideways."

Faculty Consultative Committee (FCC) wishes to provide faculty members with an opportunity to express to us and to each other their individual views on the strategic-positioning recommendations recently forwarded to President Bruininks. There will be four open forums to be held to discuss the strategic plan recommendations. Members of the FCC will then meet with President Bruininks, Provost Sullivan, and other members of the administration to discuss faculty responses to the recommendations. The forum at UMM will be held Monday, April 11, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the HFA Recital Hall. Elementary or secondary education program applicants: You must take the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) before entering either the elementary or secondary education program. The test is offered at UMM on April 16 and June 11. Also, all education students MUST pass all three areas of the PPST and all required sections of PRAXIS II before a Minnesota teaching license will be granted. Contact Counseling or Pat Nelson in the Education Division Office for information on registering immediately.

The Grants Development Office is hosting the Principal Investigator Workshop (Responsible Conduct of Research - RCR), Part 2, via ITV on Tuesday, April 19 in Room HFA 7 from 1-4 p.m. Please note that, according to the Regents Policy, awards and account numbers cannot be set up for principal investigators who have not completed both parts 1 and 2 of the Principal Investigator Education Program. This is effective for external funds as well as internal funds from the Graduate School, such as Grant-in-Aid awards and Summer Research fellowships. Those whose research areas include human subjects need to complete a separate training session as well. Upon approval of their administrative unit, all Faculty and P&A staff are eligible to be principal investigators for grants. Summer Financial Aid:
The last day to complete an application for May or Summer financial aid is Friday, June 3, 2005. To be eligible for financial aid, you must be enrolled for all summer classes/courses by Monday, June 6, 2005. You must accept (and apply for- if required) summer loans by Monday, June 13, 2005.
