Troy Goodnough has been appointed as UMM’s first campus sustainability coordinator. The responsibilities of the newly established position include creating a campus sustainability plan assisting faculty and students with research, projects and curricula promoting green building, landscaping and recycling policies and serving as a resource to the community and to the region. Goodnough, along with Greg Cuomo, head of the West Central Research and Outreach Center, will be Scientists on the Spot during “Science Buzz,” a program of the Science Museum of Minnesota during October-December. Paula O'Loughlin, political science, was the guest on the September 11 "All Things Considered" on MPR. The story, about the Willmar primary Senate race between Dean Johnson and Michael Cruze, also appeared on MPR's Web site.
Jamey Jones, geology, co-authored a paper, titled "Three Proterozoic
orogenic episodes and an intervening exhumation event in the Black Canyon
of the Gunnison region, Colorado," that was recently published in The
Journal of Geology (Volume 114, p. 555-576).

Students interested in entering elementary or secondary education program: You must pass the Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST) [also known as PRAXIS I] BEFORE entering either the elementary or secondary education program. Attention elementary education majors planning to graduate in 2009: There will be an informational/application meeting for all Elementary Education majors planning to graduate in 2009 on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. in MRC 205. During the meeting, questions will be answered as to the pre-requisites required when you should apply to the program when you should begin the program student teaching graduation, etc. If you have already picked up your application packet, please bring it with you to the meeting. Weather permitting, the UMM telescope on the 4th floor of the Science building will be open for public observing on Friday, Sept. 22, 9 to 10 p.m. (Homecoming Weekend). In case of clouds (or worse), the event will be rescheduled for the next evening (Sat.) at the same time, unless marked "no rain date."
