John Hanson is UMM’s first Killam Fellow
Senior John Hanson of Falcon Heights is the first UMM student to receive a scholarship from the Killam Fellowships Program. The Program provides awards for undergraduate students attending college in either Canada or the United States to attend a single semester as an exchange student in the other country. Read more here.
Kellcee Baker is UMM’s first Udall Scholar
Sophomore Kellcee Baker is the first UMM student to be selected a Udall Scholar by the Morris K. Udall Foundation. She is one of 80 students from 64 colleges and universities selected this year. Read more here.
UMM is, officially, an All-Steinway School
Samuel Eberwein, district manager of Steinway and Sons Piano Company, and Carolyn Olson of Schmitt Music presented a plaque May 6 to officially designate UMM as an All-Steinway School. UMM, which purchased 27 Steinway pianos for Humanities Fine Arts in 1972, joins the likes of Juilliard, Oberlin and Yale—87 schools in total worldwide—with this official designation.
Excellence of students to be applauded during May 16 events

45th Commencement May 17
The 45th annual Commencement ceremony at the University of Minnesota, Morris will culminate the UMM experience for graduating seniors who will receive bachelor's degrees this year. The event will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, on the Campus Mall. U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, Fifth Congressional District of Minnesota, will give the commencement address on the topic, "The Politics of Generosity, Inclusion and Courage." Graduating senior Alex Carlson, recipient of the Curtis H. Larson Award, will speak on behalf of the graduates.
Students Melissa Rynerson, Andrew Windschitl and Sarah Winikoff, along with Tracey Anderson, biology faculty, presented a poster, titled "Comparing the Macroinvertebrate Communities of Two Prairie Pothole Lakes With Varying Water Quality During the Winter Season," during the annual meeting of the Minnesota Academy of Science, which was hosted by Bethel University on April 25.
Two UMM faculty have been awarded Grants-in-Aid for Research, Artistry and Scholarship by the University of Minnesota Graduate School. They are Marynel Ryan, assistant professor of history, for her project, “The Household in the Development of Modern Economic Thought,” and Jimmy Schryver, assistant professor of art history, for his project, “Petra Garden and Pool Complex Excavation.”
Event to honor Professor Emerita Liselotte Gumpel
UMM alumni and friends of UMM Professor Emerita Liselotte Gumpel will gather in the William G. Shepherd Room of the Weisman Art Museum on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. The occasion will honor Professor Gumpel for her donation of a collection of works by Katerina Wilczynski to the Weisman's permanent collection. UMM at the St. Paul Saints
Reserve up to four free tickets by July 11 to join UMM at the St. Paul Saints game—vs. the Wichita Wingnuts—Wednesday, July 23, at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. Tailgating starts at 4 p.m. Game starts at 7:05 p.m. Tickets and tailgating fare are compliments of the Office of Admissions and the Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving.
