    News and announcements:

    Author Will Weaver will provide Commencement keynote
    Author and outdoorsman Will Weaver will provide the keynote address during the Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16. Weaver will sign copies of his books in the lobby of the Student Center beginning at 10:30 a.m. Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance will host a free community event featuring Weaver at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Common Cup.

    Information meetings on national scholarships for graduate study
    The Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) will sponsor an informational meeting on national scholarships for graduate study (Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, Cambridge, Mitchell) at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the ACE office. Application deadlines are in early October 2009. Students are encouraged to attend and learn more about these scholarships if you want to apply next fall or in two or three years.

    Human Nutrition Symposium
    Plan to attend the Second Annual UMM Human Nutrition Symposium at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in Science Auditorium. The students of BIO 1002 Human Nutrition class will debate three of the most popular methods for weight loss with an opportunity to ask questions. In addition, as part of the Morris Healthy Eating Project, come and learn which of the Morris Fast Food and Convenience store chains offer the healthiest food choices.

    Deadline dates for 2008-2009 Financial Aid
    1. Student Employment
    The last day to submit your spring time sheets for student employment payroll is Friday, May 15, 2009. If time sheets are turned in after May 15 you will not be paid under the student employment payroll. You will need to deal directly with your employer to be paid from department funds. This may cause a delay in receiving your paycheck.

    2. Student Loans
    The last day to increase or apply for a Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized, SELF, or PLUS loan for spring semester is Friday, May 1, 2009.

    3. Applying for May or Summer Session(s) Financial Aid
    The last day to apply for May or Summer financial aid is June 5, 2009. To be eligible for May or Summer financial aid, you must be enrolled for all summer classes by June 12, 2009.

    4. Graduation
    Graduating students who have borrowed from federal loan programs should complete exit counseling before the end of spring semester.

    Accomplishments:

    Library Enrichment Grants totaling $1,900 were announced in five distinct areas during the Briggs Library Associates annual meeting held April 16. The awards were presented to Assistant Professor of French Tammy Berberi (for French women writers), Philip Deger, economics/management lecturer (for a Studs Terkel collection), student Jessica Pederson (for sustainability resources), UMM student club Kadima (for Jewish studies materials), and the UMM Saddle Club (for books on horses). Each proposal came from a University of Minnesota, Morris student, faculty member or club.

    UMM in the News:

    Arne Kildegaard was interviewed April 22 by Minnesota News Network’s Stan Turner about renewable energy economics.

    [Minnesota Daily, 4/22/2009] Professor of Political Science Paula O’Loughlin was interviewed for “RNC 8 prosecutor talks trial strategy, politics: Susan Gaertner’s gubernatorial candidacy has been marked with activists’ accusation of political motivations in the courtroom.”

    [St. Paul Legal Ledger Capitol Report 4/23/2009] Alumna Alana Petersen and the Morris campus are mentioned. Petersen “has been named Minnesota state director for presumptive U.S. Senator-elect Al Franken,” according to the story. Similar stories published in other statewide media.
