Symphonic Winds concert to feature world premier of Scaphoid Void

Recital Hall, Humanities Fine Arts
The Symphonic Winds will be in concert on Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m., in Recital Hall. The ensemble will perform Scaphoid Void, composed by Joe Carucci, assistant professor of music. Ann DuHamel, director of piano studies, and Jeanine Barrett, will serve as guest pianists. Read more »

Privratsky brothers immersed in University of Minnesota politics
Twins are known for sharing a variety of things—genes, looks, mannerisms, and a plethora of other little connections. For the Privratsky brothers, a shared interest in University of Minnesota student government is one more bond to add to the list. Read more »
Students In Service projects taking off in west central Minnesota
The Center for Small Towns (CST) and the Office of Community Engagement are participating in the Students In Service (SIS) program and increasing the number of positions available. The program’s purpose is to meet the needs of the community while working to “foster within students an ethic of civic responsibility.” Read more »
Call for Distinguished Alumni Award nominations
The UMMAA invites you to submit nominations for the UMMAA 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award. The award honors alumni who make noteworthy contributions in their professional lives, in public service, or in service to the University. Nominees must be alumni and may be nominated by anyone. Accomplishments
Cyrus Bina, professor of economics and management, chaired two sessions and presented a paper on capitalist competition at the Eastern Economic Association Conference.
Congratulations to the Cougar men’s and women’s basketball teams for advancing to the UMAC championship playoffs. The Cougar women won the UMAC championship game, and they play again on March 4, 2011, against Coe College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ann DuHamel, pianist and director of keyboard studies, has been invited to play at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York in March 2012.
David Swenson, director of student activities and conferences and special events, co-presented a Association of College Unions International (ACUI) conference session, “Sustainability for Small Colleges: Size Matters” with Neil Gerard, Pomona College.

Cyrus Bina, professor of economics and management, was interviewed by the Minnesota News Network on Mideast unrest and by reporter Leslie Brooks Suzukamo for a Pioneer Press story on the oil market, “Gas hikes enter the fast lane.”
The Midwest Rural Assembly website features a video interview of David Fluegel, Center for Small Towns community program specialist.
KSAX television, the West Central Tribune, and the Morris Sun Tribune covered United States Senator Al Franken’s visit to the University of Minnesota, Morris to discuss renewable energy.
Media heavily covered the University of Minnesota students’ Rally for Affordability at the Minnesota State Capitol. Morris students appeared in many photographs and videos, and were quoted in a number of stories:
