“Prairie Yard and Garden” (PY&G), on Pioneer Public Television, will visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on Thursday, May 5. Peter Moe, operations director, will introduce varieties of lilacs and discuss their characteristics with host Larry Zilliox. Read more »

Katie Saddison ’11, White Pigeon, Michigan, University of Minnesota, Morris Air Quality Green Corps member, has organized a bike silent auction on the mall from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6. Pickup for auction winners of the bikes will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. The project supports the Morris BikeShare program. Read more »

Free bike workshop scheduled
Saturday, May 7, 2011, noon until 3 p.m.
Recycling building
On Saturday, May 7, a bicycle workshop will held for members of the campus and community to make minor repairs to their own bikes. From noon until 3 p.m. at the Recycling building in the North parking lot, a local technician will be on hand to help attendees and provide tire tubes, chains, and brakes to those in need of replacement parts. Free pizza will be served at the workshop at 1:30 p.m. Read more »

Consumers Digest ranks Morris in top five in nation in college value
Consumers Digest has ranked 100 colleges and universities as “top values” out of more than 2,000 United States institutions that offer four-year degrees. The rankings are based on attributes that validate or define the institutions’ academic prowess factored against annual cost of tuition, fees, and room and board. Among 50 public institutions cited, the University of Minnesota, Morris scored second in the nation. Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri, ranked number one. Read more »
Jennifer Rothchild, associate professor of sociology and anthropology, receives the University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association Teaching Award
Jennifer Rothchild, associate professor of sociology and anthropology, received the 2011 Morris Alumni Association Teaching Award. This award honors individual University of Minnesota, Morris faculty members for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education by calling attention to educational philosophies, objectives, and methods. Naomi Wente ’13 receives Newman Civic Fellow Award from Campus Compact
Campus Compact has announced that Naomi Wente ’13, Dodge Center, has been honored as a Newman Civic Fellow. The award recognizes inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Read more »
Morris students experience valuable job shadowing at Prairie Ridge Hospital and Health Services
Morris students have always been encouraged to take their classroom knowledge and find ways to practice it in real life situations. Such has been the aim of Morris students Katelyn Kuenn ’11, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Tara Gromatka ’06, Alexandria. Kuenn and Gromatka have been “job shadowing” medical providers at Prairie Ridge Hospital and Health Services in Morris. Read more »
Forty-eighth Commencement scheduled for May 14
More than 300 seniors will receive bachelor of arts degrees during the 48th annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Faculty, staff, family, and friends will gather on the mall to recognize the accomplishments of the graduates. The celebration begins with division receptions from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and the ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. Read more »
GreenCorps member Kate Saddison ’11 strives to improve safety and encourage walking and biking
Spring is officially upon us, and what better way to celebrate it than to spend time outside. GreenCorps member Kate Saddison ’11, White Pigeon, Michigan, is encouraging people to prioritize spending time outside through her two main GreenCorps projects: supporting Safe Routes To School (SRTS) and making the Morris BikeShare more sustainable. Student employment announcement
The last day to submit timesheets for student employment is Friday, May 13, 2011. Timesheets turned in after May 13 will not be processed through student payroll. Students will deal directly with employers to be paid from department funds. This may cause a delay in receiving a paycheck.
Financial aid announcement for May or summer session(s) applications
The last day to apply for May or summer financial aid is Tuesday, June 7, 2011. To be eligible for May or summer financial aid, students must be enrolled for all summer classes by June 17, 2011.
Graduating seniors loan announcement
Graduating students who have borrowed from federal loan programs should complete exit counseling before the end of spring semester.

Cyrus Bina, professor of economics and management, was interviewed by writer Todd Nelson for the Finance & Commerce story, “Back to the future: Author challenges oil assumptions.”
Keith Brugger, professor of geology, was interviewed for a story, “Earthquakes happened in region in 1975, 1993,” that was aired/printed by a number of media outlets in the region.
Less than 24 hours after Consumer Digest released its Top Five Values in Public Colleges and Universities, including Morris’s second place standing among public universities and colleges, more than 120 print and broadcast media across the nation printed/aired the report, from Hawaii to Tennessee, from Florida to Minnesota.
In a story for ESPN, “A look inside scouting departments,” reporter Mike Rodak notes that Monti Ossenfort ’00, former Cougar quarterback, has split the last nine seasons between the scouting departments of the Patriots and Texans. Read more »
