The Opening Faculty and Staff Convocation on Wednesday, August 17, at 3 p.m. in Recital Hall, will mark the opening of the 2011–12 academic year. New faculty and staff members will be introduced, and Chancellor Johnson and Dean Finzel will provide remarks.
Autism, Asperger's and Academics: Life Without Filters

New University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler will visit campus on Tuesday, August 23, participating in an open meeting for faculty, students, and staff from 1:30 until 2:15 p.m. in Recital Hall.

Forbes ranks Morris on Top Colleges Lists
Forbes magazine has ranked the best 650 undergraduate institutions in the "America's Top Colleges" list. Morris was ranked 90th overall and 16th in the "Best in the Midwest." Read more »
STELLAR introduces international students to campus, community, and Minnesota
Morris hosted its inaugural Summer Transition for English Language and Liberal Arts Readiness (STELLAR) program during summer 2011. STELLAR is designed to provide international students with a holistic approach to attending college in an English speaking country. A comprehensive, living and learning program, the three-credit course seeks to improve students' English skills to introduce students to American campus life and academic culture to help students gain a better understanding of a liberal arts education and to familiarize students with the campus, the community of Morris, and the state of Minnesota. Morris featured in Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012
Morris has been included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012. Colleges featured were chosen based on a broad range of subjects, including academic quality, student body, social life, financial aid, campus setting, housing, food, and extracurricular activities. Read more »
Tournées Film Festival brings contemporary Francophone cinema to Morris
The French Discipline and Entre Nous, the French student organization, will bring the Tournées Film Festival to Morris thanks to the generous support of the French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE). The 2011 festival includes five new, award-winning feature films from across the Francophone world. Subtitled in English, the films will be screened at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays for five weeks beginning on August 31. The campus and the public are invited to the free screenings in the Student Center's Edson Auditorium. Read more »
Clay Fischer '12 brings the University's resources to Douglas County
Clay Fischer '12, Pine City, has spent the summer identifying possible internships with the Douglas County Lakes Association for fellow students. The nonprofit association is in need of interns, and Morris students are in need of internships. As Morris is the closest university, it's a perfect match. Read more »
Morris student spends summer working for positive parenting organization
Allyce Amidon '12, Falcon Heights, has spent her summer doing what she loves most—writing. She worked with the Ortonville based organization Doing Right Every Available Moment (DREAM) for Kids as a Student in Service, a part-time AmeriCorps program for college students. Read more »
Students help revitalize the community of Winsted through the arts
Winsted is a small lakeside town with a big idea. The plan is to revitalize their community and their local economy through the arts. A steady boost in population growth, interest in the arts, and leadership training led to a push for more community arts as an economic force, and the Winsted Arts Council was born. Thomas Roloff '11, Pine Springs, Ian Patterson '12, Eden Prairie, and Samantha Bruno '13, Foley, each brought a different perspective to the strategic planning project for the new council. Performing Arts Series receives grant to present a live-action graphic novel on stage
The Performing Arts Series has been selected to receive funding from Arts Midwest's Performing Arts Fund, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Minnesota State Arts Board, General Mills Foundation, and Land O'Lakes Foundation. The grant will support the upcoming presentation of The Intergalactic Nemesis, a live-action graphic novel, scheduled for November 12, 2011. Read more »

Athena Kildegaard, English teaching specialist, and Ann DuHamel, music teaching specialist, will present an afternoon of poetry and music on Sunday, August 21, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Pope Art in Terrace.
Stress reduction Course available to Morris faculty and staff
The Center for Spirituality and Healing on the Twin Cities campus will hold a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course at the Morris campus this fall. Employees are eligible for a significant reimbursement. Register at tickets.umn.edu and click on Center for Spirituality and Healing.

The Morris Healthy Eating Initiative encourages you to check out the wide selection of fresh produce and homegrown items available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June through September, at the Farmers Market.
FREF announcement for faculty
Applications for the September 2011 round of the Faculty Research Enhancement Fund (FREF) program are due in the Dean's Office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2011. The National Office of Pi Sigma Alpha has announced that the Morris Alpha Zeta Eta chapter has been honored with a Best Chapter Award. Read more »
Stephen Burks, associate professor of economics and management, presented "'The Fire Last Time:' the Long Run Effect of Secular Trends in Factor Prices and Regulation on Trucking and Supply Chain Configuration" at an invited session on the topic of "Doing More with Less: Improving Freight Throughput in a Capacity Constrained System" at the Summer Meetings of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in July 2011 in Boston. The presentation was based on a 2009 journal article co-authored with Kenneth Boyer of Michigan State University. The TRB is an operating arm of the National Academies of the United States. Burks is a founding member of TRB standing technical committee AT060, Trucking Industry Research.
Track and field Cougars freshman Kaylie Clark, Garden Plain, Kansas, and senior Megan Croatt, Bellingham, gained national honors by earning All-Academic accolades from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Read more »
Promise of the Prairie: Education in Three Acts, a documentary created by Media Services, received the University of Minnesota Communicators Forum's Gold Award at the 2011 Communicators Forum annual meeting. Read more »
Kacy Nehowig was named Miss Midwest and Katia Vantries was named Morris Area Ambassador during the Miss Morris/Miss Midwest Scholarship Competition. Vantries also received the Community Service Award for her Students in Service work at West Wind Village.

Art student Elise Porcher, Lake Elmo, was honored with the Surface Design Association (SDA) Award of Excellence for "Great Grandmother's Letters," a fiber art piece accepted for the juried Confluence: 2011 International Surface Design Association Student Members' Exhibition. Read more »
The Cougar women's track & field team was named a Division III All-Academic Team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Read more »

Cyrus Bina, professor of economics, was interviewed on Voice of America in Washington via satellite in July 2011. The two program segments on Iran's Energy Diplomacy were broadcast live across the world.
The Farmington Independent reports that Sondra Chadwick '92 will coach Farmington High School girls varsity basketball. Chadwick was an all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference player and was the NSIC Female Athlete of the Year her senior year.
The Ashland Current reports emerging Washburn musician and Morris student Daniel Gilbert will be featured at the next "Summer (Mostly) Thursdays" concert in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
David Hoppe, professor emeritus of biology, was interviewed by KSAX.
New University of Minnesota President Kaler's remarks on NPR's Midmorning with Kerry Miller included comments about the liberal arts.
Pharmacists Mutual Companies has named Sarah Sjogren Leslie '01 the 2011 Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year in Minnesota. Read more »

A nonprofit organization, Dakota Wicohan, co-founded by Teresa Luckow Peterson '91, that seeks to renew and sustain the Dakota language, has been the subject of several stories: "Land of 10,000 Stories: Reviving the dying Dakota language" by Boyd Huppert for KARE 11, "Rural MN: A Generation at the Crossroads With the Dakota language on life support, a resurgence among native youth" by Jeff Severns Guntzel for MinnPost, and "Dakota Wicohan addresses a loss by re-envisioning a future sustained by Dakota culture" in the current issue of Profile.
Kim Ukura '08 has been named editor of the Morris Sun Tribune.
