Eugenio Zapata to Present "Fantasies & Illusions" in Morris

Guest artist Eugenio Zapata will present "Fantasies & Illusions" on Tuesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall. Featuring works by Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Amy Beach, William Bolcom, and Clarence "Pine Top" Smith, the performance promises both a piano recital and multimedia presentation.

Morris Announces New Achievement Scholarship Program

Morris announces an entirely new Achievement Scholarship program for incoming students. The new program not only includes awards of higher amounts than those offered previously, but also bases award decisions on a wider variety of academic factors.

Veterans Day Chili Feed

The date of Morris's annual Veterans Day Chili Feed is set for Friday, November 9, 2012. The event will take place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Student Center's Oyate Hall Alumni Room. Education News

Students Interested in Entering the Elementary or Secondary Education Program

You must complete the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE) basic skills test before entering either the elementary or secondary education program. The MTLE will be offered at Morris on several dates each month. Contact Pat Nelson, nelsonpa@morris.umn.edu, or Jane Kill, killjb@morris.umn.edu, for information on registering.

Secondary Education Students Planning to Graduate in 2014

There will be an informational/application meeting on Wednesday, October 31, at 12:00 p.m. in Science 3655. The meeting will provide information on recommendations, interviews, and deadlines for admission to the program. Further information about admission requirements may be found in the University of Minnesota, Morris catalog.

Accomplishments

Dan Demetriou, assistant professor of philosophy, and Mark Collier, associate professor of philosophy, had a combined total of seven papers accepted for publication this year. These papers will appear in the Journal of Philosophical Research, Philosophical Psychology, Criminal Justice Ethics, and the Journal of Scottish Philosophy, among others. Demetriou's papers include "Honor War Theory: Romance or Reality?", "The Virtues of Honorable Business Executives," "There's Some Fetish in Your Ethics," and "Justifying Punishment: The Educative Approach as Presumptive Favorite." Collier's papers include "The Natural Foundations of Religion," "The Humean Approach to Moral Diversity," and "Hume's Science of Emotions: Feeling Theory without Tears."

Rebecca Dean, assistant professor of anthropology, has been accepted to participate in the University of Minnesota's 2012-13 Internationalizing Teaching and Learning (ITL) Cohort Program sponsored by the Global Programs & Strategy Alliance, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Instructional Development Services (UMD), and the Office of Information Technology. Faculty in the ITL Cohort Program represent a wide range of disciplines from all five University of Minnesota campuses.

Julie Eckerle, associate professor of English, presented her paper "Through the Irish Looking Glass: Re-Contextualizing Englishwomen's Life Writing" at the Tudor and Stuart Ireland Conference in Dublin, Ireland, August 31 through September 1, 2012. She presented her paper "Ann Fanshawe and Elizabeth Freke in Ireland: Early Modern Englishwomen's Life Writing Re-Framed" at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 25 through 28, 2012.

Amy Toscani, visiting professor of studio art, has had her sculpture "Difference and Repetition" accepted into the permanent collection at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Findings published by Stephen Burks, associate professor of economics and management, and Jon Anderson, professor of statistics, regarding obese rookie truckers and their increased likelihood of accidents were reported in an article by ScienceMag.org. The findings fuel an ongoing debate over the best way to screen commercial drivers for medical conditions that pose a risk on the road. This research is part of the long-running Truckers & Turnover Project.

In an article regarding the second annual Student Engagement Leadership Forum on Sustainability, Minnesota Daily recognized the University of Minnesota, Morris for its recent jump in Sierra magazine's "Cool Schools" ranking.

PZ Myers, associate professor of biology, was featured in an article by Bob Smietana of The Tennessean for his role in last week's CSICon, an event co-sponsored by the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and the Center for Inquiry.
