Scarborough Promotes Urban Forestry with GreenCorps
Paige Scarborough, Morris's newest GreenCorps member, has been serving the local community by promoting urban forestry initiatives. Working primarily with the city of Morris for the last several months, Scarborough has spent most of her service term assisting with a recent tree planting. She plans to spend more time on campus in the spring. Scarborough's work builds on the efforts made last year by former GreenCorps member Laura Anne Hunt '13, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Students to Spend Winter Break in Ghana
This December, Kristina Grundmanis '13, Minneapolis, and Rachel Harder '12, Redwing, are traveling to Ghana. During the trip, organized by the International Volunteer HQ, the two will spend two weeks providing child care at an orphanage. Upon returning, Grundmanis and Harder will present on their travels in order to spread awareness of international volunteerism and travel.
Louie's Lower Level Renovated and Ready for Student Life
After undergoing renovations this summer, Louie's Lower Level is again ready for use. Seeking to open the space and give it a new function, the Student Center Committee spent two years planning the renovations, which were completed earlier this fall. The space has been redesigned as a study and relaxation area for students.
Conference on Feminism Coming to Campus
This March, the Morris Feminists will be hosting a conference entitled "The F-Word: What role do you play in redefining gender and culture?" The goals of the conference include expanding socio-cultural understandings in relation to gender, investigating intersections of feminism and general empowerment, and being respectful with language. The group is requesting the help of students, faculty, staff, and the local community to create workshops for the conference. Workshop proposals are due January 25, 2013. For questions, comments and submissions, please contact Emily Mutch.
Central Lot Closed
Effective Monday, December 3, the Central Lot is closed until further notice. The East and South Lots are alternative parking for Central permits. There are a limited number of North Lot permits available for a $10.00 processing fee.
Accomplishments
Grove and Johnson Named Assistant Athletic Directors
Paul Grove, head men's basketball coach, and Matt Johnson, assistant football coach, have been named assistant athletic directors. Grove has served as head men's basketball coach for the last 11 years. Johnson has spent nine years as a football coach for the Cougars. The new assistant athletic director roles add support for a growing intercollegiate athletics program.
Jim Hall, director of information technology, was recently nominated for Computerworld's Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2013. This annual list recognizes the most accomplished IT leaders for their achievements in technology, innovation and management.
In the news
Tap Payne, professor of theatre arts, was recently profiled by the Morris Sun Tribune. In an article entitled "Tap Payne takes final bows in Morris," the paper recounts his 33 years on stage and behind the scenes in the campus and local community. In an earlier article, the paper profiled Ken Hodgson, associate professor of music, and his 34 years of service to Morris. Both Payne and Hodgson will retire at the end of the semester.
The Morris Sun Tribune reported on the UMM Adopt-a-Student program in a recent article. Featured in the article are Leslie Gubash, international students success coordinator, and Pilar Eble, international student program coordinator, as well as Chris Butler, instructor of English, sociology, and honors, and Jennifer Rothchild, associate professor of sociology and gender, women, and sexuality studies, who hosted international students at their Thanksgiving festivities.
