Jean M. O'Brien to Speak at Inaugural Wilbert H. Ahern Distinguished Lecture
Morris is pleased to welcome Jean M. O'Brien as the featured speaker in the inaugural Wilbert H. Ahern Distinguished Lecture in American Indian Studies. O'Brien is White Earth Ojibwe and a professor of history at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where she is also affiliated with the American Indian Studies and American Studies Departments.
Morris to Welcome Pat O'Brien in Underneath the Lintel
Morris will welcome veteran actor Pat O'Brien in Underneath the Lintel on Wednesday, February 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Raymond J. Lammers Proscenium Theatre. This comedic one-man show follows a reclusive librarian as he sets out on a worldwide quest to track down the borrower of a book 123 years overdue.
Ralph Williams
Ralph Williams of Morris, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the age of 96. Williams was one of the original and founding faculty members at Morris. His wife, Martha, also worked in the post office for many years. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 7, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Morris. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m.—with a prayer service at 7 p.m.—at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris.
Accomplishments
Jennifer Lund, campus police lieutenant, recently received a Regional Fitness Center (RFC) 1999-2012 Community Difference Maker Award in recognition of her many years of community service. In addition to acting as campus police lieutenant, Lund also serves as a personal trainer and lifestyle role model.
Stephen Burks, associate professor of economics and management, presented "How Big is 'Big'?, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Accident Risk Among Truckers," on Thursday, January 24, at the annual Safety Conference of the Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) in Minneapolis. The presentation discussed results that come from Morris's long-running Truckers & Turnover Project. Contributors to the material presented by Burks include Jon Anderson, professor of statistics, M. Berger (Precision Pulmonary Diagnostics), M. Bombyk '10, D. Ganzhorn '08, T. Ginader '13, M. Govada '12, J. Hickman (Virginia Tech), X. Jiao '12, S. Kales (Harvard Medical School), C. Lewis '15, A. Lexvold '13, H. Liu '15, K. Nelson '13, and J. Ning '14.
On Thursday, January 31, Brook Miller, associate professor of English, gave a lecture at the Douglas County Library titled "Setting the Pot to Boil: The Life and Art of Dashiell Hammett." This lecture was part of The Community Read! program, which strives to bring the community together to read, discuss, and celebrate books and writers. Community Read is a collaboration of Douglas County Library, Friends of the Library, Cherry Street Books, and Alexandria Community Education.
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced that 41 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota, Morris received UMAC All-Academic honors for the fall semester. Eligible athletes competed in either football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, or men's golf and earned a GPA higher than 3.5 in the fall semester.

Michael Eble, associate professor of studio art, was profiled in the Morris Sun Tribune on Saturday, January 26. His Honfleur Reflections is currently on exhibit at KK Berge Gallery in Granite Falls.
