Morris Students Speak Up on Behalf of the U of M
Morris students are playing a major role in system-wide legislative efforts. At both the 2013 University of Minnesota Legislative Briefing and the Support the U Day Rally, Morris students demonstrated outstanding leadership efforts while advocating for a proposed two-year tuition freeze for resident undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota.
Morris Receives Language Revitalization Grant from Minnesota Indian Affairs Council
Morris recently received an Ojibwe Language Revitalization Grant from the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, which will fund the Mino-Gikin'dasowin (Good Knowledge) Project. This project will expand Morris's Ojibwe language offerings and build partnerships with tribal, immersion, and Ojibwe-teaching K-12 schools regarding field experiences for Morris education students.
Morris to Host AISES Region 5 Conference
Morris will host the 2013 American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Region 5 Conference, which will be held Thursday, February 28, through Saturday, March 2. AISES regional conferences aim to educate students about the contributions made by American Indians in science and engineering fields while inspiring them to strive toward college, graduate school, and professional careers.
Morris to Host Post Racial Comedy Tour
Morris will host Christian Lander and Elon James White in a convocation on Tuesday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center's Edson Auditorium. Lander, creator of the pop culture phenomenon Stuff White People Like, and White, the award-winning creator of This Week in Blackness, address the question of what it means to be "post-racial" in their Post Racial Comedy Tour. This event is co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Council (CAC) Convocations Committee, World Touch Cultural Heritage Week, and Black Student Union.
Next Community Meal Set for Monday, February 25
The next Morris Community Meal will be held on Monday, February 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church (108 West Eighth Street, Morris). This month's menu includes meatloaf and side dishes, with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options available. The event is free and open to all members of the Stevens County community.
Next Café Scientifique to Focus on Phenomena of Light
The next Café Scientifique will take place on Tuesday, February 26, at 6 p.m. at the Common Cup Coffeehouse (501 Atlantic Avenue, Morris, MN 56267). Sylke Boyd, associate professor of physics, will lead the discussion, entitled "Sundogs and Halos and Pillars—oh my." Café Scientifique is supported in part by a grant to the University of Minnesota, Morris from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute through the Precollege Science Education Program.
Accomplishments
A Prelude to the Foundation of Political Economy: Oil, War and Global Polity by Cyrus Bina, distinguished research professor of economics, was released this month by Palgrave Macmillan. Praised by such top scholars as John Weeks, professor emeritus of economics at the University of London, Chuck Davis, professor of labor studies at Indiana University, and Anwar Shaikh, professor of economics at the New School for Social Research, Bina's new book is a "groundbreaking volume of theory and strategy on political economy and polity of the twenty-first century, which unites domains of economics, politics, international relations, and the environment in an organic whole."
Luciana Ranelli '13, Duluth, is currently featured on the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab (RMBL) alumni donor page. Last summer Ranelli participated in RMBL's National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.
In the news
Madison Anderson '13, Circle Pines, appeared in the "AISES People" feature of the Winter 2013 Winds of Change, a quarterly magazine published by the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). Anderson serves as the student representative for AISES Region 5 Upper Midwest.
Morris students were commended for their participation in last week's Support the U rally in both the Star Tribune and the Morris Sun Tribune.
