35th Annual Jazz Fest Begins Friday, April 5
The 35th annual Jazz Fest will be held Friday, April 5, through Saturday, April 6. Featuring guest artists Bill Pierce, tenor saxophone, and Steven Davis, trombone, the festival promises to be a unique and soulful experience. Performances will be held nightly at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center's Edson Auditorium. Ticket sales begin Friday, March 8.
Soup & Substance to Focus on Pets and Rental Properties
Morris will host its monthly Soup & Substance discussion on Thursday, March, 14, at 5:30 p.m. at Old No. 1 Bar & Grill (412 Atlantic Avenue, Morris, MN 56267). Sponsored this month by Stevens Community Humane Society and the Office of Community Engagement, the discussion will explore the advantages and disadvantages of allowing pets in rental properties.
Prairie Yard and Garden Travels to New London
Each week Prairie Yard and Garden (PY&G) travels the state to confer with researchers, gardening and nursery professionals, educators, and backyard gardeners about their expertise in horticulture, landscaping, and a variety of other gardening topics. PY&G airs Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. on Pioneer Public Television. This Thursday host Larry Zilliox meets with Lee and Kris Grinager—the two have developed several gardens within their small city lot.
Summer Session Registration Opens
Registration for May term and summer session courses opens on Wednesday, March 13. If you are considering taking a class to finish a major or minor, to add licensures, or to broaden your horizons, check out the courses offered today. Briggs Library Associates Collection Enhancement Grants
The Rodney A. Briggs Library Associates (BLA) is now accepting proposals for the Collection Enhancement Grant Competition. The BLA will award multiple grants, each up to $500, to at least one student/student group and at least one staff/faculty member for the purpose of enhancing and diversifying the Briggs Library collection. Items can be course-related, extra-curricular, or recreational. The deadline for proposals is Friday, March 15. Please send your submission to Jayne Blodgett.
Accomplishments
Ann DuHamel, head of keyboard studies, will be awarded the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA)-Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) Continuing Education and/or Performance Study scholarship at the Awards Brunch of the 2013 MTNA National Conference in Anaheim, California, March 13. This grant will provide piano-related advanced study opportunities.
Jennifer Goodnough, associate professor of chemistry, is a recipient of the all-University John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising. By recognizing professionals for their outstanding commitment to students, the Tate Awards celebrate the role that academic advising and career services play in the University's educational mission.
On February 26 the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced that Emily Mehr '13, Aitkin, and Kendra Wycoff '15, Montrose, were named to the 2012-2013 UMAC Women's Basketball All-Conference First Team. Mehr was also voted the 2013 UMAC Player of the Year following a standout senior season. Kayla Kraemer '16, Brainerd, won the UMAC Freshman of the Year award. Abby Fragodt '14, Benson, was named to the All-Defensive Team and an honorable mention player. Head coach Tim Grove was voted coach of the year for the fourth consecutive season. Four members of the men's basketball team were also honored by UMAC: Steve Birman '13, Duluth, and Brendon Foss '14, Hancock, were named to the second team. Foss was also named to the All-Defensive Team with teammate Logan Orazem '13, Mora. Ben Hoidal '13, Forest Lake, represented the Cougars on the Sportsmanship Team.
In the news
Chancellor Jacqueline Johnson was quoted in the Morris Sun Tribune on Saturday, March 2. Echoing sentiments expressed by University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler during last Thursday's State of the U address, Chancellor Johnson remarked on the Morris campus's role as "a cultural center for west central Minnesota" and its ability to demonstrate the importance of the humanities. She also spoke to benefits of offering academic opportunities during the summer months.
Troy Goodnough, sustainability director, spoke at the Gordon Rosenmeier Center for State and Local Government at Central Lakes College in Brainerd on Tuesday, March 5. Goodnough was joined by Ellen Anderson, senior adviser to Governor Mark Dayton on energy and environment, Jason Edens, director of the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL) in Pine River, and Craig Fink, a principal owner of Minnesota-based Denali Energy, to discuss the future of renewable energy in Minnesota.
