President Bruininks will deliver the State of the University address at UMM at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in HFA Proscenium Theatre. The speech will be broadcast live to the Coffman Theatre on the Twin Cities campus, in conjunction with the University Senate meeting, as well as to other coordinate campuses of the University. An opportunity for questions will follow the address, which is open to the public.

Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean Dr. John F. Schwaller has accepted the post of president of the State University of New York College at Potsdam, effective July 1, 2006. Dr. Judith Kuechle, chair of UMM's Division of Education, will assume the task of interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean through the fall semester of the 2006-07 academic year. Dr. Leslie Meek, psychology, will serve as assistant academic dean with Dr. Kuechle.


Accomplishments

Five UMM faculty members were recently awarded 2006 University of Minnesota Faculty Summer Research Fellowships. The purpose of the fellowships, which are administered by the Graduate School, is to encourage research and artistic creation by enabling members of the faculty to devote full time to intensive work on their projects during the summer. The UMM faculty members and their projects follow.
Donna L. Chollett, associate professor of anthropology and Latin American Area Studies coordinator, for her project, Women in Agriculture: Renegotiating Gender In The Berry Fields Of Michoacán, Mexico. She will investigate the renegotiation of gender roles in a rural Mexican community where economic transformations contributed to rising unemployment.
Mark Collier, assistant professor of philosophy, for Hume's Naturalistic Approach to Mind and Morality, which examines the positions of the famous philosopher, David Hume, by drawing on recent evidence from the social and cognitive sciences.
Michael Eble, assistant professor of studio art, for his project, Searching for Buson. The fellowship will assist him in creating a new body of work based on the haiku poems of Yosa Buson and centering on the Japanese art of Haiga.
Pareena G. Lawrence, associate professor of economics, for her project, Can Quotas in Political Participating Empower Women and Influence Economic Development at the Local Level?: A Case Study of Northern India. Her project will examine the effect of gender quotas on local municipal elections on female empowerment and political participation.
James G. Schryver, assistant professor of art history, for Port St. Symeon Ware and its Distribution in the Crusader States. His research involves the compositional analysis of pieces of Crusader pottery from Port St. Symeon, Syria, currently found in the National Museum of Denmark, which will be used to address issues in understanding life and society in different areas settled by the crusaders.

The Cougar swimming and diving team captured seven of the 12 events Saturday, winning their final home meet of the season, 118-65, over Augsburg College. Shilo Parisian won the 200 freestyle, and was on two relay teams that took first place. The two hundred-yard medley relay team that took first included Emily Helgerson, Elizabeth Schlimgen and Jamie Luecke. Two hundred-yard freestyle relay team included Kristine Ertl, Jamie Luecke and Elizabeth Schlimgen. Ertl also took first in the 200 yard 1M. Bree McCannon and Lauren Trapp had season best efforts in one-meter diving.

Vicente Cabrera, Spanish, will read from his book, Los Malditos amantes de Carolina, at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Twin Cities campus bookstore.

Alumnus Michael Rodriguez, educational psychology, is one of the recipients of the President's Faculty Multicultural Research Award. The awards, which support research for up to two years, are sponsored by the Office of the Senior VP for System Administration and the Office for Multicultural and Academic Affairs. Tickets remain for the "A Prairie Home Companion" show coming to Morris on February 11. Call 589-6356 for credit card sales, or walk into the Office of Student Activities, lower level of the student center, to purchase. Student tickets (1 per student with student I.D.) are $15, and general admission tickets are $45. If you have questions please call Maggie Larson at 589-6053.

April 21, 2006, will mark the 6th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. This event showcases a cross-section of research, creative, and scholarly work done by UMM students through independent research, capstone projects, Morris Academic Partnerships, and the like. Last year, nearly 60 students participated, presenting their work through oral presentations, posters, and live performances representing 18 different disciplines. Presentation submissions for the 2006 URS are now being accepted through Wednesday, March 1. More information about the event, including archives of previous URS abstract books and photos, can be found at URS.

The next Chancellor's Open Office hour is Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. All members of the UMM campus community are welcome to drop in to discuss topics which can be addressed in a short visit. Please note: These hours are subject to change. Elementary or Secondary Education Program applicants must take the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) before entering either the elementary or secondary education program. The next test is offered at UMM on March 4. You must sign up by February 2. Please contact Counseling for information on registering now!

Elementary Education Program applicants planning to graduate in 2008: All application material was to be submitted to Pat in the Education Division office by January 27. Interviews will be February 6 and 7. Sign-up sheets are posted on the Education Division Office door (211).
