About 50 students from UMM will participate in the ninth annual Multicultural Student Leadership Retreat (MSLR) in late January. The retreat, which is coordinated through the Office of Student Activities, will be held January 26-28, 2007, at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls.
Four members of the men’s soccer team earned Upper Midwest Athletic Conference all-conference honors. Named first-team all-conference are brothers Patrick O’Connor and Justin O’Conner. Juan Dominguez and Kellen Walker were named honorable mention. All four are freshmen. Walker and Patrick O’Connor led the team with 15 points each. Walker had seven goals and one assist O’Connor had five goals and five assists. Dominguez and Justin O’Connor were both key defenders for the Cougars. Men’s soccer team finished 3-11-4 overall and 3-7-4 in the UMAC.
Seven members of the women’s soccer team won first-team UMAC all-conference honors in the post-season awards, the most ever to earn all-conference awards in the history of the Cougar women’s soccer program. First-team all-conference winners were senior Stephanie Clark, juniors Karen Carr and Andrea Carroll-Franck, sophomores Andrea Dexter and Ashley Simpson and freshmen Maddy Gerber and Nina Jarnot.
Pam Solvie, elementary education, presented a paper, co-authored with Engin Sungur, statistics, titled "Concept Maps/Graphs/Trees/Vines in Education" at the 5th WSEAS (World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society) International Conference on E-Activities held in Venice, Italy on November 21. Another paper, “The Use of Concept Maps/Graphs/Trees/Vines in the Instructional Process‚” co-authored by Solvie and Sungur, will be published in January 2007 in the journal, WSEAS Transactions on Communications.
Women’s cross-country coach Jeremy Karger-Gatzow has been named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference co-coach of the year. Karger-Gatzow led the Cougar team to its highest finish ever, a second-place finish at the 2006 UMAC championships October 28.
Gary Donovan, Career Center director, is serving as chairperson of the Finance Committee for the Stevens County Economic Improvement Commission. The SCEIC provides economic and community development services to make the economy of Stevens County more vital and viable through job retention and job growth. Donovan has been a board member since 1994.

Elementary or secondary education program applicants: You must take Praxis I (Pre Professional Skills Test) before entering either the elementary or secondary education program. The test will be offered at UMM on January 13 and April 28. If you are an elementary education student planning to graduate in 2009 OR are a secondary education student planning to graduate in 2008 you MUST take this test no later than the January 13 test date to meet application deadlines. The January registration form should be submitted before December 14. Also, all education students MUST complete all three areas of the PPST before entering the program. Contact Pat Nelson in the Education Division Office or Jane in the Counseling for information on registering.
Secondary education applicants planning to graduate in 2008: All of the application material is due to Pat Nelson in the Education Division office no later than Friday, Dec. 22. When you return in January, remember to sign up for your interview for the secondary education program. Interviews will be Monday, Jan. 22, through Friday, Jan. 26, 2007. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the Education Division Office door (200).
The annual Art Club Holiday Sale will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 5-9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 9, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in the HFA Gallery.
