Construction and maintenance affecting UMM

Orange is the color of Minnesota in summer, and UMM is no exception. We hope students, visitors, and campus personnel will find this page useful as they navigate the construction and maintenance projects currently affecting the UMM campus.

Summer 2008 items are below.

College Avenue
During the summer of 2008, College Avenue was closed from Circle Pines to just past 5th Street. The affected area is shown in orange on the map to the right. Click the image for a larger version in a new/blank window.

The road has been resurfaced and a new sidewalk installed. We thank everyone involved for these improvements and for the patience and caution practiced by those navigating to and from campus throughout the summer of 2008.

Campus Mall road resurfacing
Approximately 275 feet of campus street in front of the Library on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive will be resurfaced before classes begin this fall. The work is scheduled to be done at the same time as College Avenue is resurfaced, approximately August 19-20. New Student Orientation and other events taking place on campus as well as the opening day of classes on August 27 are being considered during the process of scheduling dates for this work. Traffic both to and from the campus mall will be affected. Wheel chair accommodations to buildings on the mall will be via Avenida De Cesar Chavez (and crossing the emergency roadway east of Camden). More information will be forthcoming when further details are known.

Annex relocation
On August 21 and 22 the East and West annexes are scheduled to be moved. They will be relocated near the PE Center.

Regional Fitness Center (RFC)/PE Center
Due to retaining wall work, all patrons of the RFC and PE Center are asked to use the FRONT DOOR ONLY until further notice. If you park in the south lot, DO NOT attempt to enter via the south door because construction vehicles will be traveling on the south sidewalk.

Education Building excavation
Work begins July 7. During excavation, the Education Building may always be accessed via the front center extrance. Be aware, however, that all other entrances and pedestrian traffic paths, including the wide west sidewalk to 2nd street, may be blocked at various times.

Fire alarm testing
Annual testing of fire alarms and building sprinklers is July 7-11, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Folks on campus will notice loud periodic beeps, etc. UMM personnel may contact Mike Vangstad with specific scheduling concerns.

Power outages
This summer, we will be converting several more campus buildings to turbine power! This will require short-term power outages towards the end of July. Read more about the affected buildings here.
