"Letters act as practical and useful signs,
but also as pure form and inner melody"
Wassily Kandinsky

Written language is a fascinating and seminal artifact produced by human society. With a series of marks that have evolved over thousands of years one human being can transmit an idea, an emotion, or even a fleeting thought to another human being.

With the written word we need never be alone. In the company of books we can travel from the ancient past to a richly imagined future, explore the furthest edges of the universe and delve deep into the inner workings of our own psyches.

But what of the words themselves. What is hidden in plain sight between the marks that define these worlds?

I have begun an exploration of the rich variety of marks that make up written language. Utilising gestures and rhythms from the written words of numerous cultures I reinterpret their function. I create artifacts that examine the mark for it's own sake and ask the viewer

what does a mark mean?

I recently attended a course that examined the work of philosopher Meister Eckhart and the poetry of R S Thomas. It was most illuminating and helped me gain greater insight into the issues that I want to explore further with my art. Page updated - Sunday 5th November 2000
