Welcome to the American Government and Politics
Service Learning Course Page
Description of the Project:
In 2001, the University of Minnesota at Morris (UMM) was awarded a grant
from the Corporation for National Service to develop several service learning
courses during the 2000-2001 academic year. Our project was one of those funded
by the grant. My first-year American government students developed and implemented
a survey that measured the attitudes that Morris residents have about the DENCO
ethanol plant. Other small groups of students wrote brief reports on the history,
economic impact, scientific, and political aspects of the issue. In addition
to the Corporation for National Service, we are especially grateful to the Morris
City Manager Ed Larson and the Morris City Council, DENCO General Manager Gerald
Bachmeier, Morris Residents for Clean Air Representative David McRoberts, and
Faculty Center Co-Coordinator Anne Farrell. We solicited a broad range of views
about this important public policy topic, and we are indebted to all who shared
their views. Of course, the opinions stated in each of the reports listed below
are those of the authors themselves, and do not represent the views of either
myself or UMM. It is our hope that this information can be of some small value
to those who are engaged in this important public dialog.
