ADT Working Groups

The following groups, and the notes that follow, were discussed briefly at the 2001 retreat.  Given continued interest, our goal is to build on these earlier discussions and formally begin the work on these issues this year.

(The comments below were gathered from notes from the retreat, and are therefore in bulleted form.  They're not intended to be complete-- merely to give an idea of where initial discussions were headed.)

"Sharing the Craft of Teaching" Conference Planning Group

This biannual, all-University conference, sponsored by the Academy, will take place again Monday, April 21, 2003-- timed to coincide with presentation of the 2003 Morse Alumni and Graduate/Professional teaching award presentations.  The last conference was a great success and planning for this year's conference will begin at our Fall retreat.

ADT Web Page Advisory Group

The need for an ADT web page has been discussed for some time.  We not only need it for communication among ourselves, but also as an important means for outreach.  (This current web page is only to get us by until a well thought-out, effective page can be developed.)  The advisory group will work with Karen to develop ADT's web presence.  Issues:

  • What should such a page include?
  • Where should it be linked in order to be useful?
  • How do we envision its purpose in relation to the goals of the Academy?

Teaching and Diversity Working Group

Last year's discussion included the following:

  • What it is:  "diversity"? (race, social justice...).  What is it made up of and how is it assessed?
  • Direction:  1)  make up of the Academy - recruitment, part of criteria, look at SCEP criteria (ability to teach to people in varying ways), exit interviews as way to identify
  • What initiatives ADT can spearhead as means to promote - develop alongside tenure file development
  • Highlighting/celebrating what's already there - existing initiatives
  • Possible outcomes
    • ADT highlights of what IS happening: 1) clearinghouse, 2) Encourage partnerships, 3) conference and/or retreat - future themes re diversity

Teaching and Assessment Working Group

Last year's discussion included the following:

  • Accreditation review TC - 2005:  tag onto/support development of tools and how done elsewhere (bottom up)
  • Goals of courses - department goals - college goals - U (beyond "bubble sheet" measures; more conceptual)
  • Possible outcomes:
    • Sharing of information
    • Examine/update mission statements to something accessible
    • Infiltration into appropriate areas to facilitate at ground level

Status of Teaching in Merit Assessments Working Group

Last year's discussion included the following:

  • Diversity in how assessed within merit

  • Contact Joyce (CTLS) for available literature
  • Analysis of above - set of models to departments, deans, etc. (support/knowledge/push by ADT members)
  • Possible outcomes
    • recommendations to deans, departments heads...models
    • Issue:  Accessible goals in teaching effectiveness
    • "Best practices" demonstration

  • Possible outcomes:

    • Need for coordination and recruitment of departments
    • Involve Asst. Dean in Graduate School for outreach
    • Models/examples

Faculty Development and Renewal Working Group

Last year's discussion included the following:

  • What do you do post-tenure to maintain spark?
  • Single-event influences:  1) notably interdisciplinary experiences, 2) team teaching, seminar events, professional groups
  • Require:  interest and funding (ADT source or stimulated by)
  • Barriers:  1) IMG effects on interdisciplinary work, 2) structural impediments 3) "coasting" (drift into; allowed to do), 4) the "marriage" analogy.
  • Possible outcomes
    • Ongoing discussion,
    • Connect with existing resources
