Assistant Dean for Student Academic Issues

The Assistant Dean reports to the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean and is responsible for offices and issues that directly impact student learning and success at UMM.  Specific areas with which the Assistant Dean works include

 First year seminar (coordinator)
The goals of FYS are to teach students to think critically and to assess sources of information; to help students become aware of the lenses through which they perceive and recognize that their perceptions are not universal.
Retroactive course withdrawals
While the Scholastic Committee handles student academic appeals and course withdrawals during the ongoing semester, appeals for retroactively withdrawing from courses are decided by the Assistant Dean.  See guidelines and information regarding course withdrawals.
Center for Advising and Learning (Advising, Academic Assistance, and Disability Services)
Housed in Briggs Library (room 328), the Center for Advising and Learning is the place for students to seek assistance for advisor changes and academic planning information, academic assistance and tutoring, and support for students, faculty and staff with physical, mental or cognitive disabilities. These offices report to the Assistant Dean.

Other areas I work with include:

Undergraduate research and  scholarship

In  conjunction with the Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE), the Assistant Dean is specifically involved with the following:
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Bos and Tate funds for student research travel
The University's student panel of the IRB
