Psyc 1081-- Drugs & Human Behavior

Demonstration page

For this introductory course, the web page provides the usual information (i.e., syllabus, contact information, assignments), but also serves as a resource for providing additional information for those that wish to explore further and works as a course "study guide," providing section summaries and sample tests.  (See the Psyc 1081-- Drugs & Human Behavior page.)

Section summaries
These summaries give me an opportunity to rephrase information for the students, highlighting important information from lecture and the text.  The summaries are not my lecture notes, but are derived from them.
As in this example from the pharmacological section of the course, the web format allows a place to re-show overheads presented in class.
In this example, from the prevention and treatment section, I was able to expand on an in-class discussion of the DARE program by providing links to relevant sites.  Also, I could refer students back to earlier portions of the course to help their understanding of current material.

Sample exams
Upon realizing that some students had copies of old exams whereas others didn't, I started placing copies of old exams online.  This has been a valuable resource for the students.  It becomes problematic when I change textbooks or make other changes in course structure.  I've tried to remove questions that are no longer relevant.  (See Sample Exams page).

 Combination summary and self-test
In the GenEdWeb version of the drugs course, I combined the summary with "concept check," self-tests.  This was more work to set up, but I think more effective.

Other features
The Psyc 1081 site also contains
Links of interest for the course topic
Answers to a pre-quiz that students take on the first day.  The answers are elaborated on in the web page and provide testable information.  This is done to encourage students to access the web page early in the term.
