TREC at Morris Area School

The University of Minnesota, Morris TREC Program, sponsored by Morris Area Community Education, Morris Area Elementary School and Stevens County Family Services Collaborative, offers several school day and after school program opportunities for students in grades kindergarten through twelve.

The program began in 1997. Today, the program has an average of 10 to 12 tutors and 45 elementary students per day on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 3:10 to 5:30 p.m. In addition, another 16 tutors work with students in the classrooms during the school day.

A $200,000 two year grant from the Minnesota Department of Education supported the expansion of the after-school program and The ZONE opened in January of 2008. This after-school enrichment program is coordinated by Andrea Hoogendoorn with the assistance of Jen Kill and Steven Sterud. There is no cost for ZONE participants.

In addition to TREC's focus on literacy development (3:30-4:30), The Zone includes a focus on wellness (3:15-3:30 and 4:30-5:30). Wellness is supported through education on healthy eating, healthy activities, and development of healthy lifestyles.

Three overall goals direct the initiatives of the TREC Program:

  • Promote literacy in school age children and throughout local communities.
  • Provide school children with meaningful tutoring and mentoring experiences.
  • Provide University of Minnesota, Morris students with service learning opportunities.
