MINUTES 2001-2002 CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MEETING # 13
April 15, 2002, 1:00 p.m. Behmler Conference Room
Present: John F. Schwaller, Craig Kissock, Michael Korth, Jooinn Lee, Jenny Nellis, Vicky Demos, Chris DeVries, Van Gooch, Jillian Evans, Amanda Johnson, Michael Urness, Nancy Mooney, Jeri Mullin, and Ruth Thielke.
Absent: Jim Carlson, Bridget Hollermann, Dorothy De Jager, and Clare Strand
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Schwaller asked for a motion to approve the minutes from April 8, 2002.
A member brought a correction to the minutes, the GER that Fitness for Life was intended to fulfill was Health and Fitness not PE. Another member proposed a correction to say that the courses WSS 2401 and 2402 were not previously approved by CC, they are currently being taught as topics courses. The last sentence of the paragraph before the motion on the WSS courses will be deleted.
MOTION: (Korth, Urness) To approve the minutes as amended.
VOTE: (10-0-0) Unanimously approved.
SCIENCE & MATH COURSE APPROVALS
Geol 3061 is being presented for regular approval due to a change. The course is currently being taught this semester and was provisionally approved.
MOTION: (DeVries, Nellis) To accept new courses and revisions proposed.
A member questioned the change from odd number year offerings to even-numbered years in the Biology course. Would this change create difficulties for students during planning? A member noted that the course is an elective and not required for the major or minor.
VOTE: (10-0-0) Motion approved
Schwaller informed CC that these changes would go to Campus Assembly in the Fall of 2002.
SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSE APPROVALS:
Social Science is presenting six courses for regular approval; Psy 3521, Psy/Mgmt 3701, Econ 3005, 3006, 3007 and 3008.
A member questioned topics courses and the use of instructor permission in conjunction with a course prereq. Lee said faculty sometimes allow students into the courses without the prereqs. Another member wondered why the topics courses were not set up as regular courses. Lee explained that this is the tradition for Social Science. Schwaller suggested that this might not be the appropriate mechanism if they plan to teach the course more than once. Lee explained that this is how the discipline wanted to proceed with the courses. The discipline may be asked again after this year if the courses should be made regular courses.
MOTION: (Kissock, Lee) To approve the course approvals in Social Science; Psy 3521, Psy 3701, Econ 3005, Econ 3006, Econ 3007 and Econ 3008
VOTE: (10-0-0) Motion approved
Nellis stated that the French discipline would like a sentence added to Hum 3401, Hum 3401H stating “Students who wish to apply this course to their French major must enroll in Fren 3401/Fren 3401H. A member suggested that it read “major or minor”. Nellis agreed and the change was made. Nellis also noted that the French discipline also wanted to add a prereq of Fren 2002 or # for Fren 3401 and Fren 3401H.
Meeting adjourned 1:25 p.m.
